Perspective at Scale: 8 Incredible Years of Sphere Las Vegas Photography

The Sphere has completely changed the energy of Las Vegas, but for those of us focused on professional Sphere Las Vegas photography, it has rewritten the rules of architectural and event documentation. I’ve been documenting this project since 2018—from the first shovel in the dirt at the groundbreaking to the massive scale of the UFC and The Eagles.

When you work with a venue of this magnitude, you aren’t just “taking a photo.” You are managing a massive light source that doesn’t always want to play nice with a digital sensor.

The Beginning: 2018 Groundbreaking and Steel

Every revolution has a “Day Zero.” Documenting the groundbreaking back in 2018 was a moment of pure anticipation. Standing on a literal patch of dirt with James Dolan, Charles Dolan, Sheldon Adelson, and Miriam Adelson as they officially kicked off the project is a perspective I’ll never forget.

From that first shovel, the project moved into a massive engineering puzzle. I spent years on-site during the construction phase, documenting the “bones” of the building. One of the standout moments was the “Topping Off” ceremony—watching that final beam and the American flag hit the summit was a piece of Vegas history.

Community and Creativity: The XO Student Design Challenge

One of the most rewarding chapters of this 8-year journey has been documenting the XO Student Design Challenge. Seeing the next generation of digital artists create content for the world’s largest canvas was inspiring.

My focus here was capturing the intersection of local talent and global technology. Documenting the winners and their work being displayed on the Exosphere wasn’t just an architectural shoot; it was a community story. It showed that while the Sphere is a technical marvel, it’s also a platform for local creativity.

The Technical Battle: Sphere Las Vegas Photography Insights

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Sphere is that it’s “easy” to shoot because it’s so bright. In reality, the Exosphere is an incredibly challenging subject. It’s essentially a 2K video screen with constant motion graphics, meaning capturing a perfect still is difficult to begin with.

When you’re shooting a digital subject with a digital sensor, you’re constantly fighting moiré and refresh rate issues. I actually found that my Nikon Z9, despite being a flagship, was occasionally problematic because it only has an electronic shutter. For certain captures, moving over to the Nikon Z6III provided a much cleaner result. It’s a specialized environment where the “best” gear isn’t always the right gear for the specific refresh cycle of the screen.

Interestingly, the “Bowl” (the 16K interior screen) is a completely different animal. Despite being even more immersive, it is remarkably clean to photograph for the most part. Whether it’s the hyper-realistic landscapes of Postcards from Earth or the vibrant world of The Wizard of Oz, the interior sensor-to-screen relationship is much more forgiving than the exterior.

Step Inside: The Interior Vibe

Beyond the screen, the interior architecture is a lesson in luxury. Spaces like the Delta SKY360° Club and the VIP lounges are all about atmosphere. My goal here is to document the “mood”—balancing the sleek, modern lines with the soft, sophisticated glow of the lighting.

The Main Event: Legends in the Bowl

Documenting the talent at the Sphere is a high-speed exercise in composition. From residency launches to the high-stakes energy of UFC 306, the scale is unprecedented. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to capture a wide range of acts and experiences in this space:

  • U2 and The Eagles: Documenting the pioneers of the long-term residency format.
  • UFC 306: Capturing high-speed sports action against cinematic visuals.
  • LEGO Star Wars Event: One of my favorite moments was capturing Jennifer Koester, President of Sphere Business Operations, alongside the massive LEGO X-Wing.
  • The Wizard of Oz: Capturing a classic story reimagined for the 16K immersive environment.
  • XO Student Design Challenge: Highlighting the local creative talent that brings the Exosphere to life.

Brand Activations and the LEGO Smart Brick

Beyond the screen, documenting brand activations like the LEGO launch was a highlight of my work here. Capturing the massive LEGO Star Wars X-Wing was one thing, but documenting the LEGO smart brick activation really showcased the venue’s versatility. These shoots require a specific approach—balancing the high-tech interior lighting with the vibrant, iconic colors of the LEGO brand to ensure the scale feels as massive in a photo as it does in person.

A Note on the Freelance “Vault”

As a freelancer specializing in Las Vegas Sphere Photography, there is a unique professional discipline involved. The reality is that I am restricted to sharing only what has been officially cleared or posted. By limiting my public portfolio to approved images, I ensure that the work I show is exactly the image the venue wants to project to the world. It’s about being a partner to the project, not just a person with a camera.

Looking Forward

My journey with the Sphere started at the groundbreaking in 2018 and continues through every new residency. As the venue evolves, so does the technique required to capture it. If you’re looking for a photographer who understands the technical nuances of the Vegas Strip’s most complex subjects, let’s connect.
