Latin Grammy Awards Behind the Scenes – A Las Vegas Event Photographer’s View

Behind the Scenes at the Latin Grammy Awards

The Latin Grammy Awards behind the scenes process is unlike any event I photograph all year. As a Las Vegas event photographer, I shoot a lot of high-intensity jobs, but this one always feels like its own universe. You start the afternoon on a quiet red carpet, and within minutes it turns into organized chaos: talent arriving all at once, publicists rushing, producers waving in your direction, and a line of photographers all trying to create something special in a space that’s constantly moving.

That’s the part I love.

Kacey Musgraves poses on the Latin Grammy red carpet wearing a red strapless gown with swirling embroidered patterns.
Gloria, Emilio, and daughter Emily Estefan arrive together and pose on the Latin Grammy red carpet wearing coordinated black outfits.

The Red Carpet: Fast, Loud, and Exciting

Being a red carpet photographer means you’re multitasking the entire time. You’re not just capturing each artist—you’re also tracking who they are, when they arrive, and what’s coming next.

There’s a reason I take photos of the name cards that publicists hold off to the side. Those images are how my editor in Los Angeles identifies the talent and captions the selects I transmit in real time. On a carpet like the Latin Grammys, where multiple artists can hit your section at once, having those reference frames is crucial. It’s the only way to stay fast and accurate.

This carpet moves quickly. There’s very little room for hesitation. You’re shooting, tagging selects, and transmitting all at once—all while staying aware enough to catch the real moments: a laugh, a glance back at the crowd, or a connection between artists.

You’re constantly shifting focus—shooting someone in front of you while already noticing who is walking toward the carpet next. Every moment counts, and when the carpet gets crowded, it becomes its own kind of beautiful chaos.

How I Transmit in Real Time

A big part of my workflow is built around speed and reliability. For this show, I use my Nikon Z9 paired with an AT&T hotspot that has an Ethernet port. I tether the camera directly with Ethernet because it’s simply more stable and faster than Wi-Fi in a venue packed with thousands of devices.

Inside the Z9, I mark my selects by hitting “select for upload” and the camera automatically sends them to my editor via FTP. I also use the Z9’s voice memo feature—something more red carpet photographers should take advantage of—to add context to images when needed. That extra five seconds helps my editor understand exactly what’s happening on the red carpet without us needing to message back and forth.

Transitioning to the Telecast

Shooting the live show requires a completely different mindset. As a concert photographer, I’m used to reading the rhythm of performances—anticipating when a singer’s going to hit the light, when a guitarist’s going to lean into the solo, when the crowd is about to surge.

The Latin Grammy telecast mixes music, staging, and broadcast cues. It becomes a hybrid between photographing a concert and photographing a live TV production. The lighting changes instantly, the performers move fast, and you need to anticipate every cue with split-second timing.

You’re constantly reacting—adjusting exposure, swapping lenses, reading the energy onstage and in the room. Lens choice becomes strategic: primes for the clean, dimensional moments; zooms for the unpredictable ones.

Why Wireless Transmission Matters for Event Photographers

More and more, clients and editors expect images within minutes—not hours. For any Las Vegas event photographer looking to elevate their game, wireless transmission is a massive advantage.

Your editor can publish while the event is happening.

You become more valuable to major outlets and organizations.

You stand out among photographers who still deliver at the end of the night.

Once you dial in your setup, it becomes second nature.

What Keeps Me Coming Back

Every time I cover this show, I’m reminded why I love doing this for a living. The pressure sharpens you. The moments surprise you. And when everything clicks—the talent, the light, the timing—you get images that feel alive.

Being a red carpet photographer, a concert photographer, and a Las Vegas event photographer means embracing unpredictability. You chase the moments as they happen, knowing you only get one shot to nail them.

Events like the Latin Grammy Awards push you, challenge you, and give you those unforgettable frames that remind you that you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
